Heavy goods vehicle (HGV) operator licensing forms

You have to apply to the Traffic Commissioners for Great Britain to be a goods vehicle operator.

There’s a different process to apply in Northern Ireland.

Apply for an operator licence

Forms to apply for a goods vehicle operator licence by post. You’ll usually get a decision within 9 weeks if you apply by post, but it can take longer.

You can also apply for a licence online. You’ll usually get a decision within 7 weeks if you apply online, but it can take longer.

Manage your operator licence

You can also manage your licence online.

Surrender your licence

Use this form to surrender your operator licence.

You can’t surrender your licence online.

Transfer of operating centre (schedule 4)

You can only do this if either:

  • you’ve taken over an existing operator centre and don’t want to increase the vehicle and trailer authorisation
  • you’re applying for a new licence and don’t want to increase the vehicle and trailer authorisation of the existing operator centre

You can’t apply to transfer an operating centre online.
