Pay the heavy goods vehicle (HGV) levy

You need to pay the HGV levy before entering the UK if the HGV:

  • is not registered in the UK
  • weighs 12,000kg or more
  • is not exempt

You do not have to sign up for an account to use this service, but if you do you can:

  • pay the HGV levy faster
  • change the dates you want the levy to start (up until 1 day before)
  • get a refund
  • pay for a levy for more than 1 month
  • see your payment history
  • register and manage your vehicles
  • allow someone else to manage your account

You can also check if you’ve paid a levy on your HGV. You’ll need to know the front licence plate number of the vehicle you want to check.

  • prepayment through your account
  • bank transfer
  • PayPal

Exemptions for zero emission HGVs

You do not need to pay the HGV levy if your vehicle is zero emission.

You can choose to register your vehicle with the Department for Transport to help the system recognise it is zero emission. This reduces the chance of you getting stopped for not paying.
