This guide sets out essential information for British nationals residing in Nepal, including advice on health, education, benefits, residence requirements and more. We are unable to provide any guidance on general lifestyle enquiries apart from the information and links listed below. This information supplements the Travel Advice for Nepal.

Healthcare is poor in most places outside the Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara. Please ensure that you have a comprehensive medical insurance before travelling to Nepal. Emergency treatment for foreigners in Nepal can be expensive.
You should contact your insurance/medical assistance company promptly if you are referred to a medical facility for treatment.
For a list of government hospitals and clinics, see the Nepal Department of Health website. Health care facilities, hygiene, infection control and sanitation in government hospitals are of poor quality, particularly in the rural areas. Health services are poor by international standards and diseases and illnesses include diarrhoea, goiter, intestinal parasites, leprosy and tuberculosis are common.
Most expatriates who choose to educate their children in Nepal should send them to private schools. There are a range of international, British and American schools in Kathmandu (capital city).
Employment and recognised qualifications
Most British qualifications will be recognised in Nepal and British nationals may work in Nepal if they have an appropriate visa and work permit.
Entry and residence requirements

British nationals intending to obtain a residential visa has to submit a certified document showing a source of income of 20 thousand American Dollars or convertible foreign currency to be spent in Nepal. For renewals of residential permits, foreigners need to submit a certificate showing that they will spend or has spent the same amount at one time or at several times per year in the country.

Driving licences and vehicles
British nationals with a valid UK driving licence will need to apply for a driving permit from Department of Transport.
Residents can open an account at most banks in Nepal. Valid identification is necessary. The bank may have additional requirements depending on your residence status, type of account, business/income source etc.
Social ethics and traditions
There are a few things you need to know before you go on a holiday to Nepal and things you need to know while you are here. More than 45,000 British nationals visit Nepal every year. To ensure that your stay is memorable, for all the right reasons, respect the laws and values of the country.
Nepal is a country that has a rich culture and heritage. Traditions have been passed down for centuries. Majority of the Nepali’s practice Hinduism. Buddhism is also practiced by a lot of people as it is linked historically with Nepal.
The Nepali calendar begins in mid-April. Unlike in the UK, Saturday is the only official weekly holiday. The important annual holidays include a combination of Hindu and Buddhist religious festivals, eg Dashain and Tihar (compared to Christmas and New Year celebrations in the UK).
