Joint Statement for the Interactive Dialogue on the UN Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan. Delivered by the UK's Permanent Representative to the WTO and UN, Kumar Iyer.
Mr President,
I deliver this statement on behalf of all members of the Coalition for Atrocity Prevention and Justice for Sudan. The Coalition welcomes the findings of the Fact-Finding Mission and its tireless efforts to document the atrocity crimes, conflict-related sexual violence, and other grave violations committed across Sudan.
We are deeply alarmed by the FFM’s findings on the escalating impact of drone warfare on civilians and civilian infrastructure. We are seeing drone strikes intensify and prolong the conflict, causing devastating harm to civilian populations and locations critical to civilian survival. All parties must comply with international humanitarian and human rights law, protect civilians including humanitarians, allow safe and voluntary movement of civilians, and ensure safe, unimpeded and sustained humanitarian access.
We also note with concern the FFM’s findings on the continued illegal flow of weapons and external support that sustains this conflict – this must stop. We call on all states to cease support to the warring parties, upholding sanctions obligations, and support efforts to end impunity and ensure accountability, without which there can be no lasting peace. The Coalition reiterates its commitment to preventing atrocities, protecting civilians, supporting a sustainable Sudanese-led peace, and supporting the Fact Finding Mission’s work; its independent reporting remains essential for both protection and accountability.
