Legalisation of a document or certificate

You can get a document legalised with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) - giving the document the same authenticity it has in the UK, in countries who have signed up to the Hague Convention of 1961.

To get a Companies House document ‘legalised’ by the FCO, it must have the original signature or seal of a British public official. To get a document signed in person by a Companies House official, you’ll need to request a certified certificate or certified copy.

DVD products

Companies House offers two different DVD products:

DVD directory

Our DVD directory contains basic company details on all 3 million live companies registered in the UK, along with companies that have become dissolved in the last month.

The DVD has a built in search facility that allows up to 6 combinations of searches on:

  • company name
  • company number
  • registered office address lines
  • postcode
  • date of incorporation or range of dates
  • SIC code(s) or description
  • company type
  • company status
  • accounts type.

The directory is produced monthly and a one off copy costs £30, or a year’s subscription for £300 - copies are available from our information centres and contact centre on (0)303 1234 500.

The DVD directory doesn’t show details of annual turnover, telephone numbers or directors’ details.

The data can’t be exported, but we do provide a one off version of the directory with exportable files at a cost of £1,000. The maximum number of results that can be exported at one time is 30,000.

The data on each DVD is available for six months from the date of purchase after which time it locks and you will be unable to access the data.

The product requires Internet Explorer to be set as the default browser and is not compatible with Apple Mac computers.

Change of name and dissolved companies index on DVD

Our change of name and dissolved companies index on DVD contains information on over 3 million companies registered in UK that have changed their name, or have been dissolved in the last 20 years.

Search options available include:

  • company number
  • company name
  • company type
  • company status
  • changes of name
  • dissolved/closed dates
  • address lines including:
    • care of address lines (C/O)
    • PO box numbers
    • postcodes

The information is updated annually and available to purchase for £30 from our contact centre on 0303 1234 500.

The change of name and dissolved DVD doesn’t show details of annual turnover, telephone numbers or directors’ details. No data can be exported from the DVD.

The product requires Internet Explorer to be set as the default browser and is not compatible with Apple Mac computers.

Data products

Companies House offers a number of different data products, including:

Company data product

The company data product is a free monthly snapshot of basic company details for live companies on the public register.

Access the free company data to get bulk downloads of UK company data.

The bulk snapshot is split into a number of downloadable ZIP files which contain data in comma separated values (CSV) format.

The snapshot contents are compiled up to the end of the previous month and made available for download within 5 working days of the previous month end.

Find more information about the data returned in our Company Data Product Data Fields (PDF, 150KB, 1 page)

Accounts data product

The accounts data product is a free downloadable ZIP file, which contains the individual data files (instance documents) of company accounts filed electronically at Companies House.

The data is provided in eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) format.

Access the daily accounts data files or the monthly accounts data files for the last year.

The individual files within the ZIP file will be in one of the following formats:

  • inline XBRL format (.html file extension)
  • XBRL format (.xml file extension)

A new daily file is added each morning over a 5-day period (Tuesday to Saturday). Each file contains the accounts data registered on the previous day.

A new monthly file is added within 5 days of the end of the previous month.

Data is only available for electronically filed accounts, which currently stands at about 60% of the 2.2 million accounts filed at Companies House each year.

Uniform resource identifiers (URI)

Our free URI service gives access to basic company details using a simple uniform resource identifier (URI) for each company on our register.

The URI is a unique web address for each company. Simply use the company number within the URI structure: http://data.companieshouse.gov.uk/doc/company/{companynumber}

eg. company number 02050399 would be represented as: http://data.companieshouse.gov.uk/doc/company/02050399

Use the URI address with your internet browser and it will display the company data as a HTML page. You can also return other data formats including RDF, JSON, XML, CSV and YAML.

The URI can be embedded as a link on your own website or the data can be used in your own software.

Find more information about the service and the data returned in our Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI) Customer Guide (PDF, 370KB, 9 pages)

XML gateway search service

Our XML gateway offers access to Companies House data and documents as a computer to computer search service.

Data and documents are requested and delivered using XML (eXtensible Markup Language). This will allow users of the service to search company records from within their own software.

Standard XML data schemas must be used as defined in the interface specification which can be found on our dedicated XML gateway output page..

Users must carry out a test to confirm they can request and receive data before an XML output account can be opened.

There is a £4.70 monthly subscription fee, plus additional charges for data or documents requested. Users get %15 off their total monthly invoice value. Basic company information is available for free.

If you’d like to know more about development or testing, you can contact xml@companieshouse.gov.uk.

File company information

It’s easier and quicker to file your information online with Companies House using:

All services are available 24/7 for the submission of information. Any submissions which require manual inspection will only be processed during our normal working hours.

Companies House will accept the delivery of documents and forms by post or by hand at our offices, but check our office opening times and out of hours delivery facilities before you do.

See our full list of filing fees to find out which forms have a filing fee.

WebFiling

File your company information online now - including accounts, annual return and company updates. Watch a video to see how easy it is to file online.

Using the online filing service offers you advantages over filing on paper, such as:

  • saving you time and money - an online annual return costs significantly less than paper
  • less chance of rejections due to in built checks and pre-populated data
  • automatic email acknowledgement

WebFiling users also get access to additional services, including:

  • email reminders – a free and effective way to be reminded when your company accounts and annual returns are due for filing
  • protected online filing (called ‘PROOF’) – prevents attempts to change your registered office address or directors without your knowledge

Register for WebFiling

You’ll need to register a password and email address, then request an authentication code for your company - which is sent to your company’s registered office by post, so allow plenty of time for delivery.

Software filing

Our software filing service enables the submission and acknowledgement of electronic company data between presenters and Companies House via our XML Gateway.

The service is open to everyone but will mostly benefit those who file frequently - on a daily or weekly basis. The more documents you file, the more appropriate software filing is likely to be.

Software filers can submit all the same forms that can be filed using the WebFiling service, plus additional types of company accounts and incorporations.

To use the software filing service you’ll need to open an online filing account and must either purchase suitable software or develop your own.

More information about software filing.

If you want to purchase software

Some commercially available software packages provide a wide range of transactions whilst others are more specialised.

These have been categorised depending on whether you need to find:

Opening an online filing account

You will need to open an online filing account if you want to use software to file information. Once opened, the presenter information you need to use the service will be sent to you by post. If you open a credit account, any filing fees will be itemised on the monthly statement you receive.

You can choose to pay by variable direct debit. You can also sign up to use our online eBilling service to access your invoices quicker.

Developing your own software

To develop your own software, you will need to have expertise in eXtensible Markup Language (XML).

A technical interface specification giving detailed information for software developers is available from our Customer Care section on 029 2038 0336 or email xml@companieshouse.gov.uk

The transaction types and submission processes are documented on our schema page.

If you are developing inline eXtensible Business Reporting Language (iXBRL) for filing accounts online, you can test your submission using our validator.

Bespoke products

Companies House will consider requests to develop a bespoke product to meet an individual’s specific data needs, but only in cases where the information is not available within any of its other products.

Written details of the exact requirements will need to be provided to ensure the products can be accurately costed. All Companies House fees are based on cost recovery principles. We aim to recover our costs, plus a 3.5% return to HM Treasury.

Customers will be contacted when the costs have been calculated to ascertain if they still wish to proceed with the request. The product will not be released to a customer until the fee has been paid.

For more information about bespoke products contact us at enquiries@companieshouse.gov.uk.

About Companies House fees

All statutory fees on this list have been confirmed by Parliament and are set by the following statutory fees regulations:

Not all fees fees are set by the above regulations, some fees are administratively set by a Fees Determination (PDF, 256KB, 13 pages) under section 1063(5) of the Companies Act 2006.

These include fees for:

  • new products
  • bulk products
  • products that are in decline (eg. fax copies)

The registration fees above do not apply to documents delivered under the Companies Act 1985 or the Companies (Northern Ireland) Order 1986.

Any document delivered to the Registrar of Companies under the Companies Act 1985 or the Companies (Northern Ireland) Order 1986 will be free of charge.

Any changes in fees or any new fees will be shown here.

Cost recovery principles

As a Trading Fund Companies House must operate on the basis of cost recovery. It has a statutory duty to break even over time and to achieve an average annual return (surplus) of 3.5%.

Companies House fees are linked, as required by European Law and HM Treasury guidance, to the forecast cost of providing each service and the way in which customers access them. A number of things are considered when Companies House sets its fees.

Guidance on Managing Public Money requires fees to be set to recover the full cost for each separate service allowing for a cost of capital of 3.5% - this prohibits cross-subsidy between different services.

The EC First Company Law Directive requires copies of company records to be made available at the administrative cost of producing them.

The EC Capital Taxes Directive allows company registration costs to be met from fees, but prohibits charges that are effectively taxes. This means that prices cannot be set above costs for the relevant services.

Case law, such as Fantask A/S e.a. v Industriministeriet Erhvervministeriet and Ponente Carni SpA and Cispandana Costruzioni SpA v Amministrazione delle Finanze dello Stato provides further guidance on the costs that can and can’t be taken into account for setting fees.

The Competition Act 1998 prohibits the abuse of a dominant position in a market.

eBilling service

The Companies House eBilling service is an online facility to access and manage any credit accounts you have with Companies House.

How eBilling works

Instead of receiving your monthly invoice by post, an online version of your invoice is added to your eBiling portal. Companies House will send you an email notifying you when your latest invoice is available.

You can manage your account and contact details from within the service.

Register for eBilling

To register for eBilling you’ll need to:

  • enter your name and email address
  • choose a password
  • have your latest invoice available to confirm:
    • account number
    • last statement date
    • last statement amount

Always use lower case for your email address when logging into your account, even if you used upper case when registering.

You can find the email address used to register for eBilling on any billing invoice email we’ve sent you.

Unlocking your account

If your account is locked, contact enquiries@companieshouse.gov.uk with your 8 digit account number - you’ll find this in the subject line of previous emails we’ve sent you (it’ll start with either 002, 005 or 006).

We’ll aim to unlock your account within 48 hours and we’ll send you an email to confirm it’s been unlocked.
