Delivery of documents by post

Anyone filing documents at Companies House should understand their legal responsibilities.

Accounts must be delivered to Companies House by their due date. If accounts are filed late, the company will be issued with a late filing penalty.

You can check your company record to see when your due dates for filing are and that details held at Companies House are up to date.

The Registrar of Companies cannot accept delays in transit as a reason to waive a penalty.

Company names on documents need to be given in full eg A Demo Company Limited shouldn’t abbreviate their name to A Demo Co Ltd. Abbreviations in company names aren’t acceptable.

All documents must be delivered to the Registrar in an acceptable format or they will be returned to the presenter or the company for amendment.

Using a postal delivery service

If you’re using a postal delivery service we suggest that you:

  • be aware that postal and other delivery services may be subject to loss or delay
  • note any industrial disputes or other factors which may make it difficult for a carrier to deliver on time
  • use a guaranteed delivery service when posting close to a deadline

We will acknowledge receipt of documents if you provide a stamped addressed envelope and a copy of your covering letter - this only confirms we've received the document, not that it has been registered.

Where to send your documents

English and Welsh companies must send their documents to the Registrar in Cardiff.

Scottish companies must send their documents to the Registrar in Edinburgh.

Northern Ireland companies must send their documents to the Registrar in Belfast.

Additional information

Guidance on the legal responsibilities of company directors, the due dates for filing accounts and the delivery of documents to the Registrar of Companies can be found in our guidance.

More detailed information on what is considered the proper delivery of a document can be found in our guide on the Registrar’s rules and powers.

Royal Mail’s published figures (September - November 2014) on delivery performance show that as much as 7.1% of first class mail may not be delivered by the next working day after posting.
