You can apply for land which you believe is of important historical interest to be included in the Register of Parks, Gardens and Demesnes of Special Historic Interest.

The following issues will be considered:

  • integrity of the site’s design
  • historic interest and importance of the site, including age and associations
  • horticultural/arboricultural interest and importance of the site
  • architectural interest of buildings and structures on the site
  • archaeological interest and importance of the site
  • nature conservation/scientific interest of the site
  • aesthetic and scenic quality and importance of the site
  • contribution to local landscape character
  • surviving condition of the site today
  • high recreational or educational potential of the site

Being added to the register means the site will benefit from the following:

  • protection with regards planning consent
  • render it eligible for contributions towards tree maintenance
  • replanting of stands or shelterbelts
  • advice from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) under the Northern Ireland Countryside Management Scheme
  • support and grants from the Forest Service under their Woodland Grant Scheme
