How to get online help with Self Assessment from HMRC by using our digital assistant, community forums, YouTube videos and online tools.

Using HMRC’s online services are usually much quicker, easier and cheaper than calling us.

You can find out how to get help from HMRC if you need extra support if you cannot use our online services.

Ask for help online

You can use HMRC’s digital assistant if you need to ask further questions about Self Assessment or have a specific query. You can also ask to chat with an adviser, if one is available.

You can sign in to your personal tax account or business tax account to check your records and manage your details.

You’ll need your Government Gateway user ID and password to sign in. If you do not have a user ID, you’ll be able to create one when you sign in for the first time.

  • choose to be contacted by HMRC electronically, instead of by letter
  • track forms and letters you have sent to us
