Self Assessment: general enquiries

Online

Find guidance on Self Assessment tax returns

The quickest way to get help is to chat with HMRC online. You can ask our digital assistant for help with:

  • registering for Self Assessment
  • ending Self Assessment
  • filing your tax return and paying your bill
  • appealing a penalty
  • requesting a refund
  • activation codes

If our digital assistant cannot help, you can ask to speak to an HMRC adviser if one is available.

If you’ve already contacted HMRC, you can check when you can expect a reply.
