British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka
We develop and maintain relations between the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka as well as with Maldives.
We deal with a wide range of political, commercial, security and economic questions of interest to the UK and Sri Lanka and Maldives. There is no British diplomatic mission in the Maldives. All assistance to the Maldives is provided by the British High Commission in Colombo.
The High Commission in Colombo provides consular assistance to British nationals in both Sri Lanka and Maldives. An Honorary Consul in the capital, Malé, liaises with the British High Commission in Colombo on emergency consular matters.

Passports and emergency travel documents
How to renew or replace your British passport if you live outside the UK and information on getting replacement travel documents if your passport is lost or stolen. If you are travelling urgently and your passport is not available, you may be able to apply for an emergency travel document (ETD).
If your passport has been lost you will need a police report and English translation before an ETD can be issued.

Notarial and documentary services
The British High Commission do not provide any notarial services and recommend people check the lawyers list or seek advice from a local notary public.
Births, deaths and marriages
Information on how you can register a birth or death or marriage which occurred overseas, and legal documents for couples marrying or entering into civil partnerships abroad. To register a birth or death in Sri Lanka, book an appointment by clicking here.
Services provided by other authorities
- legalising UK documents/certificates: Legalisation Office
- provide copies of British birth, death & marriage certificates: General Register Office
- renew British driving licenses or provide certificates regarding British driving licenses: DVLA
- provide good conduct certificates: Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly the Criminal Records Bureau)
- certificates confirming British nationality: UK Border Agency
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office holds and uses data for purposes notified to the Information Commissioner under the Data Protection Act 1998 (which may be viewed at www.ico.gov.uk). Such personal data may be disclosed to other UK government departments and public authorities.

Out-of-hours emergency assistance
British nationals who need emergency assistance outside normal office hours should call +94 11 539 0639. Out of hours calls to this number will be connected to the Global Response Centre of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.
