For more than 30 years, we have identified goods for checks at the border using the Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system. HMRC is in the process of withdrawing CHIEF services and the Customs Declaration Service will operate as the UK’s single customs platform.
On 30 September 2022 CHIEF closed for import declarations, and the Customs Declaration Service must now be used when declaring imported goods.
On 30 March 2024 we will formally close the CHIEF system for exports and businesses need to declare all goods through the Customs Declaration Service from this date.
