Draft river basin management plans: 2021

River basin management plans (RBMPs) describe the challenges that threaten the water environment and how these challenges can be managed and funded.

These are the draft RBMPs for each river basin district (RBD).

River basin management plans: 2015 are the current plans and here you can also find:

  • relevant background information and links to previous consultations
  • information on the Environment Agency’s approach to the strategic environmental assessments and habitats risk assessments for the updated plans

The draft river basin management plans consultation is now closed. It ran from 22 October 2021 to 22 April 2022. The responses will help shape how the water environment is managed. A consultation on the draft flood risk management plans 2021 to 2027 ran at the same time for 3 months from 22 October 2021.

Once your responses are addressed, the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will consider, and if content, approve the updated RBMPs. The Environment Agency has prepared the draft RBMPs in line with ministerial guidance and the Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) (England and Wales) Regulations 2017.
