Giles Lever
British Ambassador to Vietnam
The British Embassy in Hanoi maintains and develops relations between the UK and Vietnam.
Find out more on our UK and Vietnam news page. We provide services to British nationals living in and visiting Vietnam. You can access UK government services while in Vietnam.
Our work covers a range of areas including:
If you’re in Hanoi and you need urgent help (for example, you’ve been attacked, arrested or someone has died), call +84 (0) 24 3936 0500. If you’re in the UK and worried about a British national in Vietnam, call 020 7008 1500.
We are open by appointment only, 09:00am - 10:00am Tuesday and Thursday and 02:00pm - 03:00pm Wednesday (except public holidays).
You can apply for an emergency travel document if you’re abroad and your passport has been lost or stolen, damaged or expired, and you can’t get a new or replacement passport in time to travel.
Apply online for an emergency travel document
If the person needing the emergency travel document is under 16, a parent or guardian should apply on their behalf.
You will need to obtain an exit visa issued by the Vietnam Immigration Department when leaving the country on an emergency travel document issued in Vietnam. This can take up to 5 working days to obtain. Please contact us as soon as possible if you are travelling in a week or less.
If you are travelling in more than 3 weeks, check if you can get a new or replacement passport in time to travel.
If you’re not sure, check if you’re a British citizen.
If you’re not a British citizen but think you may be eligible, contact us to apply for an emergency travel document.
Once you have contacted us, you will be advised to make an appointment to apply for an emergency travel document at the British Embassy in Hanoi.
We may be able to offer notarial services for British nationals in Vietnam. Check the full list of Notarial and documentary services we provide.
Find out how to get official confirmation that your UK public documentation is genuine so it can be accepted by foreign authorities. The UK does not require any documents to be legalised for use within the UK.
UK law states that we have to charge for some of our services. See full list of current fees in Vietnam.
We also provide services in Ho Chi Minh City.
