Evaluation Strategies from UK government departments

The Evaluation Task Force showcases evaluation strategies from departments to demonstrate our commitment to government reform.

Why publish an Evaluation Strategy?

Evaluation strategies set out a department’s commitment to undertake and learn from evaluation activity. Evaluation is a key part of good policy making in a learning environment.

Published evaluation strategies demonstrate a public commitment to undertaking high-quality and appropriate evaluation, which helps build stakeholder and public trust in policymaking, promote efficiency in public expenditure, and demonstrate transparency.

What is an Evaluation Strategy?

An Evaluation Strategy sets out a department’s strategic commitment to evaluation, including:

  • the department’s vision and overarching goals for evaluation;

  • the department’s approach to identifying and prioritising areas for evaluation activity;

  • how the department uses evaluation results;

  • a commitment to robust evaluation methods, with experimental methods, considered the default; and

  • commitments to the timely publication of evaluation plans (including communication plans) and trial protocols, results, and datasets.
