Several NTS tables have been restructured to improve accessibility and better meet user needs. This includes the reorganisation of existing content and the introduction of new tables where additional detail is now provided. Further information on these changes is available in the NTS table index.
In 2025, the digital travel diary was introduced as the primary mode of travel data collection, with most households opting for digital data collection and the remainder using the existing paper diary.
A technical report detailing the survey methodology and data collection operations including the implementation of the digital diary, is available.
The National Travel Survey results in 2025 showed:

people in England made 841 trips on average in 2025, about 16 trips per week

this was a decrease of 9% to 2024 (922 trips on average), and a decrease of 12% compared to 2019 (953 trips on average)

there were increase in trip rates amongst buses in London and London Underground, however, surface rail trip rates decreased and buses outside London trip rates remained similar

walking trips decreased in 2025 with 243 trips per person, this was 9% lower than 2024 but similar to 2019

the 5,605 miles people travelled on average in 2025 was a decrease of 8% compared to 2024 (6,082 miles on average), and a decrease of 14% compared to 2019 (6,500 miles on average)

on average people spent 342 hours travelling in 2025, around 56 minutes a day

on average people spent 25 minutes per cycling trip, 22 minutes per car driver trip and 19 minutes per walking trip, on average in 2025

the most common trip purpose in 2025 was for shopping with 145 trips per person, this was followed by commuting with 112 trips per person
