Armed Forces Covenant: activities and achievements

Based on the categories set out in the Armed Forces Covenant annual report 2014, we’ve listed our achievements and the activities we’re working on to support the armed forces community.

1. Healthcare

We have:

  • completed £138 million Midlands Medical Accommodation project provides a single purpose-built world class centre of excellence for the training and provision of Defence Medical Services
  • improved have also been made in the access to healthcare provided for reserve forces; including fitness to work medicals, dental, hearing and sight assessments
  • extended the Defence Rehabilitation Programme to include mobilised reservists and those injured during reserve training

We are:

  • continuing work to implement the recommendation of the Care Quality Commission to further improve the level of care provided by Defence Medical Services

2. Education

Some of the activity undertaken by the Directorate of Children and Young People (DCYP) to help combat educational disadvantage includes:

  • managing a further £20 milion in Libor fines to improve the infrastructure currently in place in support of childcare provision for service families
  • promoting and spreading good practice in the use of the £300 Service Pupil Premium
  • working with the Department of Education to identify where the current Schools Admission Code, or the interpretation of it, has not resulted in removing disadvantage for children from service families
  • changing the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Code of Practice to ensure it meets the specific needs of children from service families with special educational needs
  • working with the education departments in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland on a range of issues affecting children from service families
  • drafting guidance on term time absence for headteachers in England
  • working with the Scottish government and the Student Award Agency to clarify eligibility for Higher Education Funding for children from service families with a ‘Scottish’ connection

3. Housing

We have:

  • launched the moneyforce ‘Homefinder Tool’ to help improve the availability of advice on housing issues and home ownership for service personnel

We are:

  • continuing to provide high quality service family accommodation (SFA) properties by not allocating any properties in the UK below a certain standard condition and providing additional investment for improvement work to existing housing stock and the construction or purchase of new service accommodation.   • establishing a single living accommodation management information system to provide critical information on the condition of the estate and inform key investment decisions

4. Commercial services

We are:

  • focusing on the effect on credit ratings caused by a mobile service lifestyle
  • focusing on the effect on car insurance no claims bonuses experienced by those serving overseas
  • looking into the negative effect serving overseas can sometimes have on mobile phone contracts
