PM calls with the Emir of Qatar, King of Saudi Arabia and King of Jordan

The Prime Minister David Cameron spoke to the Emir of Qatar, the King of Saudi Arabia and the King of Jordan this evening (18 August 2014).

A Number 10 spokesperson said:

The Prime Minister spoke to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, this afternoon about Gaza and Iraq.

On Gaza, they agreed on the urgent need to extend the current ceasefire which expires this evening and agreed that both sides needed to take the difficult decisions to help achieve that as part of working towards lasting peace.

On Iraq, they agreed that the Prime Minister designate, Dr Al Abadi, has a very important role to play in strengthening Iraq’s ability to counter ISIL, particularly by establishing a strong unity government and working closely with allies across the region and beyond. The PM and Emir welcomed the action taken at the the United Nations Security Council against ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), including to disrupt their financing flows.

The Prime Minister spoke to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia this afternoon.

On Iraq, the Prime Minister thanked His Majesty for the significant donation made by Saudi Arabia to the UN appeal and both leaders agreed on the importance of the international community coming together to help Iraq tackle the threat posed by these Islamic terrorists who are perverting the Islamic faith as a way of justifying their barbaric ideology.

They both expressed support for Prime Minister designate Dr Al Abadi’s efforts to form a unity government. The Prime Minister and His Majesty agreed that the world must come together to defeat ISIL terrorists. On Gaza, they agreed on the need to maintain the current ceasefire.

A Number 10 spokesperson said:

The Prime Minister spoke to King Abdullah of Jordan earlier this evening.

On Gaza, they agreed on the need for the current ceasefire to be extended and for both sides to return to negotiations for a long term 2-state solution.

On Iraq, they discussed current efforts by Prime Minister designate Dr Al-Abadi to form a unity government which is essential to defeat the threat posed by ISIL. They also discussed support for Kurdish forces, including the supply of military equipment. The Prime Minister said he looked forward to welcoming His Majesty to the NATO Summit in a few weeks time.
