Heritage Council

The Heritage Council will support government in the implementation of heritage policy in England and bring the sector’s issues, challenges and opportunities to the attention of government such as planning, environmental protection, social and economic development, education, health and wellbeing.

Role of group

The Heritage Council is a board linking the heritage sector and all government departments with an interest in, or impact on, the heritage sector in England and will act as a means of enabling dialogue and driving progress on key policy areas for heritage.

Heritage is a devolved matter but should any areas crossover with the devolved administrations, DCMS will consult them appropriately.

Membership

Core sector council members are leading organisations from across the heritage sector including Government’s advisors on the historic environment and the natural environment, key funders for heritage, private owners and key organisations providing a broader link to the sector through the Historic Environment Forum and beyond. Core departmental members are DCMS, MHCLG, DEFRA and HMT.

The Heritage Council is chaired by the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism.
