Add your client authorisations for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

How to add your client authorisations to your agent services account for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax and check which authorisations have already been added.

Before you sign up each client for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you will need to sign into your agent services account and complete the following steps.

  1. Check which Self Assessment agent codes from your HMRC online services account have been added into your agent services account.

  2. Use Self Assessment agent codes to add your authorisations from your HMRC online services account to your agent services account, if you need to.

You do not need to do this if your clients have already authorised you for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax through a digital handshake.

If you do not have an agent services account you will need to create one.

Check your authorisations in your agent services account

Before adding your authorisations, you can check which Self Assessment agent codes have already been added into your agent services account.

Sign into your agent services account and select ‘Add existing Self Assessment authorisations to your agent services account’.

If you have already added authorisations, you will see a list of the Self Assessment agent codes that have been added. You will not see a list of individual clients.

If the Self Assessment agent code linked to your clients is:

  • in this list, you do not need to add the authorisations again — you can sign up each client to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, if they are not already signed up
  • not in this list — you will need to add the Self Assessment agent code to your agent services account, so you can use the authorisations for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Add your authorisations to your agent services account

To add client authorisations, you will need the Self Assessment agent code linked to those clients.

Sign into your agent services account and select ‘Add existing Self Assessment authorisations to your agent services account’.

You will need to follow the steps to add your client authorisations for Self Assessment from your HMRC online services account.

This will add all client authorisations linked to that Self Assessment agent code to your agent services account.

If you have more than one Self Assessment agent code, you can repeat this process.

Adding authorisations will:

  • not remove access to your client authorisations in your HMRC online services account — you will still be able to use your HMRC online services account for Self Assessment and for clients who do not need to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
  • not automatically sign up each client for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax — you or your clients will still need go through the sign up service
  • authorise you as a main agent for these clients — find out more about what main agents and supporting agents can do

When you add a Self Assessment agent code, your HMRC online services account will be linked with your agent services account.

This means if you add or update clients for Self Assessment in your HMRC online services account, it will update your permissions in your agent services account. 

If you stop working on behalf of any Making Tax Digital for Income Tax clients, you will need to sign in to both your HMRC online services account and agent services account to delete each of their authorisations.

If you are not authorised by your clients, you cannot sign them up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

After your clients are authorised in your agent services account

You can sign up each client for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.
