This document outlines the UK government's commitment to uphold universal human rights as we seek re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The UK is running for election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term January 2021 to December 2023. Our pledges are grounded in UK priorities at home and abroad, and draw on a tradition of democratic and inclusive values:

  • promoting gender equality
  • standing up for freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief
  • bolstering democratic values
  • defending media freedom
