Engineering CoC Requirements

Updated 29 June 2023

Important information

This page outlines the requirements for an engineering CoC application, after a successful oral exam. These requirements apply to all UK engineering CoC applicants.

Unless specifically requested on the application form, STCW certificates, academic examination passes and other certificates not have been recorded with your NOE application. Please ensure you provide every document listed below for your CoC application, even if you have previously sent these in.

Failure to provide all of the required documentation may result in your CoC application being delayed or even rejected.

The following certificates require updating every 5 years:

  • Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Code A-VI/1-1)
  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (STCW Code A-VI/1-2)
  • Proficiency In Survival Craft & Rescue Boat (STCW Code A-VI/2-1)
  • Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW Code A-VI/3)
  • Tanker Training Certificates (if no sea service in last 5 years)

Medical Fitness Certificates are valid for no more than 2 years.

SQA Engineering Knowledge examination certificates are valid for 3 years only. However, if you completed the SQA Management Level examinations for your Second Engineer CoC, you will not need to take these again for your Chief Engineer CoC.

Yacht and Small Vessels SQA examination certificates are valid for 3 years only.

If you wish to carry a tanker endorsement over to a higher capacity CoC, we require evidence of 3 months service on the relevant tanker completed within the last 5 years, or a valid MCA approved tanker training certificate issued within the last 5 years.

At least 6 months of the qualifying seagoing service must have been performed within the 5 years immediately preceding the issue of your Certificate of Competency.
