Strategic Command, often referred to as UKStratCom, was formerly named Joint Forces Command.

Responsibilities

We are responsible for:

  • providing leadership in the cyber and electromagnetic domain for the Ministry of Defence (MOD)
  • preparing for and managing joint force operations
  • educating and training the UK armed forces and MOD civil servants
  • leading in the information environment for defence and providing the MOD’s information and communication technology systems.
  • promoting and protecting the health of the UK armed forces
  • making sure that effective digital and information technology is put into the hands of the military and business front line
  • providing logistics, engineering and equipment support to defence
  • supplying intelligence products for policy makers in the MOD and UK government

Our organisation

Led by the Commander Strategic Command General Sir Jim Hockenhull, our headquarters is based in Northwood and the command is represented at sites across the UK and overseas.

We are made up of the following organisations:

  • Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ), including the deployable Standing Joint Force HQ, commands and executes joint military operations and provides policy-aware military advice to the MOD
  • Directorate of Special Forces conducts short notice high risk operations in support of UK interests
  • Defence Intelligence provides strategic defence intelligence to MOD and the armed forces
  • Defence Medical Services, including the Joint Medical Group provides end to end medical services to the MOD
  • Director of Overseas Bases is responsible for the UK’s Overseas Bases Support Units, the Global Support Organisation, and the UK’s contribution to Arms Control and Verification on behalf of the Ministry of Defence
  • Joint Force Development provides the research, analysis, force development, joint training, education, doctrine, and innovation that underpins Defence through its individual sub-units: the Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre; the Defence Academy ; the Royal College of Defence Studies; and the Directorate of Joint Warfare (JW)
  • Defence Digital coordinates defensive cyber operations for the UK and supports the overall cohesion of all information technology across the MOD
  • Defence Support Organisation provides leadership and coordinates improvements across the defence logistics, engineering and support functions
  • jHub defence acts as a broker to help suppliers new to defence or government, taking time to understand what a business offers and how it may help the military customer.
  • National Cyber Force is responsible for operating in and through cyberspace to counter, disrupt, degrade and contest those who would do harm to the UK or its allies.
