Chief of Staff
The Chief of Staff (COS) is the principal personnel officer for the Joint Forces Command (JFC), and provides command oversight of the UK’s Permanent Joint Operating Bases (PJOBs).
The COS and JFC provide command, direction and assurance to the PJOBs of British Forces Cyprus, British Forces South Atlantic Islands, British Forces Gibraltar and the British Indian Ocean Territory on behalf of Commander JFC.
Permanent Joint Operating Bases
The permanent military presence on the PJOBs contributes to the physical defence and maintenance of sovereignty of the UK overseas territories, as well as the delivery of UK government policy. The UK military presence reassures the local populace of our enduring commitment and provides a visible deterrent to any external threats.
In some of the PJOBs, we also deliver administration functions in support of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The administration of the Sovereign Base Areas is managed by a separate civil organisation, the Sovereign Base Area Administration, but also comes under the direction of Commander British Forces in Cyprus in their dual role as Administrator.
