Minister of State for Faith and Communities

Responsibilities

The minister works with religious and community leaders to promote faith, religious tolerance and stronger communities within the UK.

Current role holder: The Rt Hon Baroness Warsi

Baroness Warsi was appointed Senior Minister of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and Minister for Faith and Communities at the Department for Communities and Local Government in September 2012. She was previously Chairman of the Conservative Party and Minister without Portfolio.

She is a Conservative member of the House of Lords.

Education

Baroness Warsi attended Birkdale High School and Dewsbury College before studying law at the University of Leeds, gaining an LLB. She later attended the College of Law, York, to complete her legal practice training.

Political career

She became Conservative Party Vice Chairman for Cities and Diversity and was appointed to the House of Lords in 2007, becoming Shadow Minister for Communities and Social Action in the Shadow Cabinet. In May 2010 she was appointed Minister without Portfolio.

Career outside politics

Baroness Warsi trained with the Crown Prosecution Service and the Home Office Immigration Department before setting up her own specialist legal practice.

She has also been a racial justice campaigner for many years and was instrumental in the launch of Operation Black Vote, a not-for-profit national organisation that works towards greater racial justice and equality throughout the UK.

Personal life

Baroness Warsi is a keen cook and a fan of cricket and home improvement programmes. She lives in Wakefield with her husband Iftikhar and their 5 children.
