We released the latest New Enterprise Allowance official statistics on Thursday 27 March 2014.

We released the latest mandatory programmes official statistics on Wednesday 27 November 2013.

We released the latest Youth Contract measures official statistics on Tuesday 25 February 2014 under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Mandatory programmes statistics

This publication covers statistics on mandatory programmes for the period May 2011 up to and including August 2013:

  • Mandatory Work Activity referrals and starts
  • Skills Conditionality initial provider interview, training placement and National Career Service referrals and starts

Important points from the latest release

From May 2011 up to and including August 2013 there have been:

  • 189,230 referrals to Mandatory Work Activity placements
  • 74,070 starts on Mandatory Work Activity placements

From August 2011 up to and including August 2013 there have been:

  • 453,100 Skills Conditionality initial provider interview referrals
  • 227,710 Skills Conditionality initial provider interview starts
  • 500,520 Skills Conditionality training referrals
  • 239,680 Skills Conditionality training starts
  • 552,270 Skills Conditionality National Career Service referrals
  • 307,110 Skills Conditionality National Career Service starts

An ad hoc release of the early impacts of Mandatory Work Activity was published in June 2012. It compares the benefit and employment outcomes of a cohort of Mandatory Work Activity participants with those of a matched comparison group.

New Enterprise Allowance statistics

The latest New Enterprise Allowance official statistics were released on Thursday 27 March 2014. From April 2011 up to and including December 2013 there have been:

  • 82,060 starts with a New Enterprise Allowance mentor
  • 40,240 starts to the New Enterprise Allowance weekly allowance

Before December 2013, New Enterprise Allowance statistics were included in the Get Britain Working statistical series, which can be found under the Youth Contract statistics publications.

An ad hoc statistical release New Enterprise Allowance: analysis of benefit status of participants was published in July 2013. The publication assesses the level of benefit receipt for the first cohort of individuals receiving New Enterprise Allowance in the year after starting the allowance. It assesses the proportion of individuals continuously off benefit for 13, 26 and 52 weeks and the proportion on/off benefit each week in the 52 weeks following allowance start.

Youth Contract statistics

The Youth Contract publication contains official statistics on starts on work experience and sector-based work academies. From the start of the Youth Contract up to and including November 2013 there have been:

  • 99,640 work experience starts by 18 to 24 year olds
  • 41,360 sector-based work academy starts by 18 to 24 year olds

The publication also includes experimental statistics and management information on wage incentives. Up to and including November 2013 for payments and December 2013 for job starts there have been:

  • wage incentive payments for 10,030 individuals
  • 4,140 26 week full payments
  • 65,470 job starts linked to wage incentives

Work experience and sector-based work academies for 18 to 24 year olds have been funded by the Youth Contract since April 2012. Until March 2013, funding for all ages came from Get Britain Working (in the period April 2012 to March 2013, funding for 18 to 24 year olds could come from either programme). Statistics for work experience and sector-based work academy starts were previously published in the Get Britain Working statistics.

An ad hoc release of the early impacts of work experience is available. It compares the benefit and employment outcomes of a cohort of work experience participants with those of a matched comparison group.
