  1. Documents

The Income Support lone parent regime concerns sanctions we impose on lone parents receiving Income Support and work-focused interviews we conduct.

Latest release

We released the latest statistics on the Income Support lone parent regime on 19 February 2014.

Statistics include data for England, Scotland and Wales for the period up to the end of September 2013.

Main points

In the year up to and including September 2013, we conducted 611,500 work-focused interviews with lone parents in receipt of Income Support.

In the year up to and including September 2013, we imposed 43,800 sanctions on lone parents in receipt of Income Support. These sanctions were imposed upon 40,200 individual claims. This represents 5.3% of the Income Support lone parent client base in that 12 month period.

Sanctions overcount

Due to a coding error, an overcount in the total number of sanctions imposed has been reported in the data released from February 2013 onwards. The figures in the 4 previous releases have been revised down accordingly as has the number of sanctions for 2012-13 in table 2 of the publication. This has had no impact on the reported number of claims sanctioned, nor the proportion of claims sanctioned statistic.

A small undercount

DWP have discovered a small methodological issue within the database production process. Initial analysis has shown that this has caused a small undercount in our WFI data from November 2011 to our latest data. This has a marginal effect on the previous year’s (2011/12) total as well as the latest data.

As the undercount is small, DWP have published the statistics as normal. Investigations are ongoing and will be reported at the earliest opportunity. Depending on investigations, statistics for 2011-12 and the latest period may be revised.

Coverage: Great Britain

Next release date: 14 May 2014.
