North west public health laboratory: services

Public health laboratory Manchester, based at Manchester Royal Infirmary, is the public health laboratory for the north west region.

The Manchester clinical laboratory is part of a medical microbiology partnership between Public Health England and the Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT).

The Manchester microbiology laboratory is the home to the PHE Meningococcal Reference Unit (MRU), the PHE Vaccine Evaluation Unit (VEU) and is also part of the Clostridium difficile Ribotyping Network (CDRN).

Services available

Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP) provides a wide range of services including:

  • bacteriology
  • virology
  • molecular diagnostics
