2. Problems signing in
You can get help with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) services if you have problems signing in.
Lost user ID or password
If you only have a personal tax account
If you’re not registered to send tax returns or payroll reports, and you know your user ID, you can request a new password.
If you don’t know your user ID, you’ll need to create a new account.
All other services
If you’ve forgotten them, you can request a new:
If you’ve lost your activation code
You’ll get a 12-digit activation code within 10 days of enrolling for a new online service, or 21 days if you live abroad. You don’t get a code for the personal tax account.
If you lose your code within 28 days of enrolling, sign in to the Government Gateway with your user ID and password. Ask for a new code by following the ‘activate’ link under ‘action’.
If your code has expired
Sign in to HMRC online services with your user ID and password and enrol for the service (for example Self Assessment) again.
It may take up to 10 days for your code to arrive, or 21 if you live abroad.

Online services may be slow during busy times. Check if there are any problems with services.
