Training and events: UKHSA Knowledge and Library Services

Knowledge and Library Services provide a range of information skills training for eligible staff. Training is available in group or one-to-one settings.

Eligibility for Knowledge and Library Services training and events

Training sessions are only available to eligible user groups: staff working in UKHSA, Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) and NHS England public health teams. If you work in local authority public health (LAPH), please visit the dedicated LAPH page for further training information.

Information skills series: search smarter, read critically, stay current

The 5 sessions in the information skills series are designed to be undertaken in sequence, but each session can also be attended individually to meet specific needs.

Formulating searchable questions and identifying relevant terms

Session 1: you will be able to take a public health scenario and turn it into a searchable question and identify relevant keywords and subject headings.

Searching databases effectively

Session 2: you will learn how to use relevant keywords to apply a search strategy to a bibliographic database (for example, Medline) to increase your confidence in literature searching.

Grey literature: what it is and where to find it

Session 3: you will learn how to what grey literature is, and develop the skills to retrieve relevant content and obtain the full text.

Introduction to evaluating the evidence

Session 4: an introduction to critical reading skills, including techniques for assessing the quality and relevance of evidence.

Session 5: an overview of KLS current awareness alerts and demonstration of how to create personalised research alerts.

EndNote training

EndNote is a reference management software that allows you to collect, organise, cite and share references. The 3 training sessions build proficiency when completed in order. You can also attend standalone sessions to meet specific needs.

EndNote: an introduction

An overview of EndNote, the reference management software provided for UKHSA staff.

EndNote: Cite While You Write 

Provides a more in-depth look at EndNote with a focus on the ‘Cite While You Write’ plugin, enabling easy citation of your references within Microsoft Word.

EndNote: collaboration and sharing

Provides a more in-depth look at EndNote, with a focus on sharing a library of references where multiple collaborators can edit the same data, and sharing copies of libraries where collaborators make changes for themselves.

UKHSA Knowledge Management events - Coffee Connect

Take part in this brilliantly simple way to connect with someone you might not normally encounter in your day-to-day work. Sometimes known as a ‘Randomised Coffee Trial’, in this session you will be randomly connected with another member of UKHSA staff and have the opportunity to take the discussion in any direction you wish (with some talking points provided by the KLS team to use if you’d like to).
