Link clients to your agent services account

Link clients to your agent services account so you can send VAT Returns and Income Tax updates.

To send VAT Returns and Income Tax updates for clients who need to sign up for Making Tax Digital, you’ll need to link them to your agent services account.

What you need

You need the government gateway user ID and password for both your:

You’ll need to create an agent services account if you do not already have one.

Linking new clients

To link new clients for Making Tax Digital for VAT you’ll need:

  • their VAT registration number
  • the date they registered for VAT

To link new clients for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax you’ll need their:

  • National Insurance number
  • postcode

Your existing clients will already be linked to your HMRC online services for agents account.

To link existing clients to your agent services account:

  1. Sign in using the Government Gateway user ID and password you got when you created your agent services account.
  2. Select ‘link your current Self Assessment and VAT clients to this account’.
  3. Enter the Government Gateway user ID and password you use to access HMRC online services for agents and follow the steps.

Your clients will be linked to both of your accounts.

To link new clients to your agent services account:

  1. Check what information you need.
  2. Sign in using the Government Gateway user ID and password you got when you registered for an agent services account.
  3. Select ‘ask a client to authorise you’.
  4. Enter your clients’ information.

What happens next

You’ll be given an authorisation link to email to your clients. They must authorise you by clicking the link within 14 days.

You cannot view your client lists through your agent services account. To view your current client lists, sign in to your HMRC online services for agents account.

  1. You cannot view client lists in your agent services account. To view your current client lists, sign in to your HMRC online services for agents account.
  2. As of 14 February, clients will have 14 days to click the link in the authorisation email.
  3. When linking new clients to your agent services account, select 'ask a client to authorise you' after you sign in.
