Vacancy details

The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. From roads to rivers, and health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life.

We are a non-ministerial government department with more than 2,500 employees, around 1,800 of whom are solicitors or barristers.

The Employment Group consists of approximately 90 lawyers who provide employment and litigation services to all government departments. This is an exciting opportunity to manage a busy team and to join GLD in a senior leadership role.

This post is based in Leeds. It involves being joint head of one of the five Employment teams (E4). This particular team is split between Leeds and London. Leadership and management of the team will be shared with another SCS lawyer based in London.

This particular team also leads on all TUPE work across government. This means that it is involved in the employment aspects of government contracts, in particular those involving insourcing or outsourcing and works closely with GLD’s Commercial Law Group. A certain amount of litigation and TUPE work now goes out to external law firms and the relationship with those providers has become an increasingly important part of the role.

E4’s largest clients are the Department of Health and Social Care (and its associated arm’s length bodies) and the Department of Work and Pensions. Other clients include the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, National Crime Agency and Highways England.
