Green Deal
This scheme is closed to new applicants. There are other schemes available that may help you reduce your energy bills. Find ways to save energy in your home.
The Green Deal scheme helped people to make energy-saving improvements to their home.
Home owners, landlords and tenants could get loans for improvements such as adding insulation or solar panels.
Selling or renting out a property with a Green Deal loan
If you sell a property or rent it out as a landlord and it has a Green Deal loan, you must:
- tell the buyer or tenant that there is a Green Deal loan and that they’re responsible for it
- show the buyer or tenant the Energy Performance Certificate for the property
You must do this before the buyer or tenant moves into the property.
Moving into a property with a Green Deal loan
If you move into a property that has a Green Deal loan, it is your responsibility to repay it. You do this through a charge added to your electricity bill.
You can change electricity supplier as long as the new supplier is taking part in the Green Deal scheme.
Your seller or landlord is legally required to tell you about the Green Deal loan.
They should give you an Energy Performance Certificate for the property. This will state what improvements have been made and how much needs to be repaid.
You can pay the loan off early but there may be extra costs.
You’ll get a letter telling you how to do this and about any charges from the company that manages the loan.
Complain about the Green Deal
Contact your Green Deal provider if you have a complaint. Their details will be on the Energy Performance Certificate for your property - find an energy certificate.
If your Green Deal provider is no longer in business, contact the Green Deal team at DESNZ for help.

If your complaint is not resolved within 8 weeks of contacting your provider, contact either the Financial Ombudsman Service or the Energy Ombudsman depending on what your complaint is about.
Contact the Financial Ombudsman Service:
- if you think you were mis-sold the Green Deal - for example, if your Green Deal provider did not make you aware of the full cost and repayment terms
- about any other financial issues - for example, if you did not get the savings you expected or you did not know you were entering a loan
Contact the Energy Ombudsman:
- if you’re not happy with the work the installer did
- if you moved into a property and the seller or landlord did not tell you about the loan
You can also contact Citizens Advice for support.
Report a company claiming to be a Green Deal provider
All Green Deal companies must be authorised. The Green Deal quality mark is a green house with a tick on the roof.
Contact the Green Deal team at DESNZ if you’ve been contacted by a company that claims to be a Green Deal provider but you’re not sure if this is true.
