UK Statement for the Interactive Dialogue with the UN Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan. Delivered by the UK's Permanent Representative to the WTO and UN, Kumar Iyer.
Mr President,
The Fact-Finding Mission’s report paints a devastating picture of the human cost of Sudan’s conflict: communities shattered, millions displaced, and civilians trapped in a cycle of violence.
The report makes clear that this conflict is not sustained by the Rapid Support Forces and Sudanese Armed Forces alone. The continued illegal supply of weapons is enabling atrocities such as those in El Fasher, prolonging suffering, and undermining prospects for peace. Those who continue to provide such support bear direct responsibility for sustaining the conflict.
We call on all states and entities to cease support for the warring parties and use their influence to protect civilians, secure humanitarian access, and help end this devastating conflict.
Mr President,
The report also underlines the urgent need for accountability. Credible, independent evidence is essential for the justice that victims and survivors deserve.
The Fact-Finding Mission lays the groundwork for accountability and ensures the experiences of victims and survivors are documented and recognised. Its mandate must be renewed so that its vital work can continue.
We particularly welcome the Mission’s positive cooperation with the African Union’s Fact-Finding Mission and encourage this partnership to deepen.
The people of Sudan deserve more than this Council’s attention; they deserve accountability, justice and lasting peace.
