UN Human Rights Council 45: Interactive Dialogue with the Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen

UK's International Ambassador for Human Rights, Rita French's statement during the Interactive Dialogue with the Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen.

Rita French

Thank you, Madam President.

We thank the High Commissioner for her statement.

The UK is deeply concerned by the findings of the Group of Eminent Experts. Their latest report alleges serious and wide-ranging human rights abuses by all parties to the conflict. The UK urges the parties to investigate these allegations and take action to promote and protect human rights, as well as to cooperate with the Group in future.

We are particularly concerned by persecution of members of minorities, including the Baha’i, in Houthi areas and indiscriminate Houthi targeting of Saudi cities with ballistic missile and drones.

A political settlement is the only way to bring stability to Yemen. The UK fully supports the efforts of UN Special Envoy, Martin Griffiths, and we urge the Yemeni parties to agree to the proposed Joint Declaration urgently.

We will continue to work with all parties to find an inclusive, sustainable political solution to the conflict. The UK is committed to supporting women’s full, effective and meaningful participation in the peace process and beyond.

The UK supports the renewal of the Group’s mandate.

How does the GEE aim to secure greater engagement by the conflict parties?

Madam President,

Thank you.
