Funding allocations for workplace cardiovascular disease checks pilot grant scheme: 2024 to 2025

Published 12 February 2026

Applies to England

Local councils (upper tier) are responsible for commissioning the NHS Health Checks programme as part of their public health responsibilities.

The NHS Health Check is England’s cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention programme. It aims to prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease, and some cases of dementia among adults aged 40 to 74 years. Each year the programme engages over one million people and prevents around 400 heart attacks or strokes.

The heart health checks in the workplace pilot grant scheme was launched in March 2024, with local councils in England invited to bid for a total of £6.67 million of funding. The programme provided local authorities with the opportunity to trial the delivery of healthy heart checks (including NHS Health Checks) in local workplaces during 2024 and 2025.

By bringing heart health checks to where people work, we aimed to test:

  • the feasibility of delivering checks in workplaces
  • whether this mode of delivery removes barriers to access and identifies people at risk of CVD in groups that traditionally do not engage with NHS services, including younger people and men

The checks can be completed quickly and easily for employees at work. The checks:

  • assess the main risk factors for CVD
  • provide advice on how a person can reduce their risk and a referral for follow up treatment if required

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) awarded 45 grants to 48 local councils to partner with local employers to deliver the programme by the end of May 2025.

Employers from a range of professions took part in the programme, including those from the building, hospitality and transport sectors and social care. The findings from the evaluation were shared during a webinar in December 2025 with the final report due to be shared with local councils in early 2026. They will inform NHS Health Check and the wider CVD policy.

The programme is part of the Health Secretary’s commitment to supporting the government’s mission to boost economic growth by improving the health of the nation.

The government is committed to reducing premature mortality from heart disease and stroke by 25% in the next 10 years. To accelerate progress towards this ambition, we will publish a cardiovascular disease Modern Service Framework (MSF) later this year. The framework will support consistent, high quality and equitable care whist fostering innovation across the CVD pathway.
