Services to treat dependence on medicines

Guidance for healthcare and public health commissioners on planning treatment services for dependence on prescription and over-the-counter medicines.

Commissioning treatment for dependence on prescription and over-the-counter medicines

NHS and local authority health commissioners can use this guidance to help plan services to treat people addicted to prescription and over-the-counter medication.

The guidance includes:

  • what medicines are being used and who is using them
  • understanding and responding to the local need
  • the situation in prisons and other secure settings

Since the publication of this guidance the joint strategic needs assessment (JSNA) support packs have been updated. For the latest versions of these packs visit Alcohol, drugs and tobacco: commissioning support pack.
