Safe passage for eels

This publication was withdrawn on 13 May 2016

The Environment Agency has worked with operators of water intakes and owners of in-river obstructions, such as weirs, to identify how they can protect European eel to help to restore the stock to a sustainable level.

It then reviewed its approach to implementing eel screening and passage regulations and chose to withdraw this regulatory position statement while it develops new guidance explaining how it will continue to implement eel regulations in the future.

The Eels (England and Wales) Regulations 2009 provides us with powers to ensure safe passage for eel.

This document sets out our approach to this regulation and how we will apply it to both our own structures and those of others. We will seek to include these requirements within existing permits and licences to reduce extra administration to operators where possible.
