Questions and responses updated with new questions (version 5).
The Industrial Hydrogen Accelerator (IHA) competition supports projects generating evidence on end-to-end industrial fuel switching to hydrogen. It will cover the full technology chain, from hydrogen generation and delivery infrastructure through to industrial end-use, including the integration of the components in a single project.
The competition will fund demonstrations and, where needed, feasibility and FEED studies:
- the feasibility studies will explore how systems could be designed and provide information on the technical requirements and costs
- the demonstration projects will construct end-to-end industrial hydrogen systems, from hydrogen production to end-use, to prove their feasibility and provide further evidence on the real-world performance and costs
It forms part of the BEIS £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, which aims to accelerate the commercialisation of innovative clean energy technologies and processes through the 2020s and 2030s.
Programme structure
- Stream 1: Demonstration projects – Grant (up to £17 million available)
- Stream 2A: Feasibility studies – SBRI (up to £2 million available)
- Stream 2B: Demonstration / FEED projects – Grant (up to £7 million available) - aiming to open December 2022, follows on from Stream 2A and open only to projects who have completed feasibility studies in Stream 2A

Events for prospective applicants
Launch and Networking Event, 9 May 2022
We held an online Launch and Networking event on Monday 9 May to provide an overview of the competition. The session presentation is available in the Documents section of this page.
Online networking platform
If you would like to network with others interested in the IHA, please sign up to the Industrial Hydrogen Accelerator Networking Platform (B2Match IHA), a virtual marketplace where you can browse the expertise, products and services of potential partners and request support from others.
Once registered you can create a personal / company profile, share your expertise, message new connections and set up bilateral meetings with other participants.
Other hydrogen and industry funding opportunities
Some other funds that may be relevant to your project:
- Industrial Energy Transformation Fund Phase 2
- Industrial Fuel Switching
- Net Zero Hydrogen Fund
- Hydrogen Business Model
- Electrolytic Market Engagement
- Low carbon hydrogen standard guidance
- Hydrogen investor roadmap
We will use the evidence generated by the IHA on the use of hydrogen by industrial users to inform strategic decisions in 2026 on the role of low carbon hydrogen as a replacement for natural gas in the gas grid. For more information on this policy area see the August 2021 UK Hydrogen Strategy.
