Get your Income Tax right if you're leaving the UK

Claim tax relief or a tax refund if you've left the UK by using the online form service or P85 postal form.

Claim online (sign in using Government Gateway)

Claim by post (use this version if you’re an agent or if you cannot use the online form)

To claim tax relief or any tax refund you’re owed, and to tell HMRC about any UK income you continue to get you can either:

  • use the online service
  • fill in the form on-screen, print it off and then post it to HMRC

To use the online service, you need a Government Gateway user ID and password. If you do not have a user ID, you can create one when you use the service.

If you use the online form, you’ll get a reference number that you can use to track the progress of your claim.

Read the guidance about tax if you leave the UK to live abroad to see if you can make a claim before completing the form.

Before you start to complete the postal form

Make sure you’re using an up to date browser.

You’ll need to fill in the postal form fully before you can print it. You cannot save a partly completed form, so make sure you have all the information you need before you start to fill it in.

Send your claim to the address shown on the form.
