This guidance was written during the 2014 to 2015 Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

This document contains advice and guidance for staff working in the funeral industry, coroner’s offices and pathology departments on Ebola virus disease (EVD), including:

  • transmission
  • national guidance on handling the remains of Ebola-infected people and their possessions
  • risk from infected human remains
  • clinical risk assessment
  • post-mortem examination
  • disposal of the remains of those suspected to have died from (or with) Ebola
  • embalming or hygienic preparation
  • viewing of the deceased and funeral arrangements
