The aim of the COVID-19 vaccination programme is to prevent serious disease (hospitalisation and/or mortality) arising from COVID-19.
In formulating their advice for COVID-19 vaccination in autumn 2026 and spring 2027, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) considered the latest COVID-19 epidemiology, vaccine coverage and safety data.
The PGD and VGD are final versions with NHS England authorisation for use by their commissioned providers delivering the national COVID-19 vaccination programme. Practitioners should follow local policy and procedures to access authorised PGD or VGD documents.
The PGD and VGD documents support the administration of COVID-19 vaccines, to individuals from 5 years of age, in accordance with the national COVID-19 vaccination programme and recommendations given in the COVID-19 chapter of Immunisation Against Infectious Disease: The Green Book.
COVID-19 vaccine (5 years and over) patient group direction (PGD) version 5.0 is valid from 1 October 2026 to 1 April 2027.
COVID-19 vaccine (5 years and over) vaccine group direction (VGD) version 2.0 is valid from 1 October 2026 to 1 April 2027.
The PGD/VGD documents should be used with reference to current national guidance, the Green Book, and summary of product characteristics (SPC) for the vaccine.
