We monitor animal disease outbreaks worldwide and assess any risk to the UK from:
legal and illegal trade in animals or animal products
wildlife movements
other disease carriers, such as insects
We record the results in outbreak assessments. This helps us decide how to manage or reduce any risk to the UK’s public health, international trade, and animal health and welfare.
There are 2 different levels of outbreak assessment. Preliminary outbreak assessments are used for new outbreaks, and full qualitative risk assessments are used for specific questions about an outbreak.
We use the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) qualitative risk analysis framework for all assessments.
