“I was saddened to learn of the death of Oswaldo Paya. He was a determined advocate of peaceful change and human rights in Cuba and was unwavering in his commitment to dialogue and reconciliation. His 2002 petition campaign calling for a referendum on democratic political reforms gathered over 10,000 signatures - a huge achievement, for which he received the European Union’s top human rights award, the Sakharov Prize. His loss is a terrible setback for those championing greater political and civil rights in Cuba.”
