FCO welcomes completion of Presidential Election in Honduras

Foreign Office Minister of State Hugo Swire offered his congratulations to Honduras, following the completion of presidential elections.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Speaking today, Hugo Swire said:

I congratulate Mr Juan Orlando Hernandez on his election as President of Honduras. I would also like to send my congratulations to the Honduran people. With the strongest voter turnout for the past ten years, this election has shown their keen enthusiasm for democracy.

The election marks an important moment in the history of Honduran democracy and I commend the political parties and electoral authorities for helping to make it a peaceful and orderly process. I hope that the Electoral Tribunal is able to use the recommendations of the Election Observation Missions to build on this success in the future.

The UK stands ready to support the Honduran government in its efforts to bring the Honduran people the security and prosperity they deserve. I wish Mr Hernandez success as he takes office and I look forward to Honduras and the UK working together for the mutual benefit of both our countries.
