UK Sea Fisheries Statistics Update

The Sea Fisheries Statistics 2023 is the first MMO statistical release to be published after the temporary suspension of the accredited official statistics designation. The temporary action was confirmed on 3 December 2024, following a request from the MMO Chief Statistician to the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR).

We remain committed to making the Sea Fisheries Statistics data available, with additional guidance for users about how to make best use of these data. These statistics remain the best available data and are still considered a reliable measure of industry activity at an overall (UK) level.

This is an official statistics release.

The publications include information on:

  • The structure of the UK fishing industry
  • Landings by the UK fishing industry and into the UK by Non UK vessels
  • Fishing Effort in the Western Waters and Sole Recovery Zone regimes
  • Trade of fish and fish products

UK Sea Fisheries Statistics archive (pre-2015) is available online.

Additional information

This release was previously published as accredited official statistics (formerly known as National Statistics). However, the MMO has written to the Office for Statistics Regulation to request a temporary suspension to the accredited official statistics designation for these statistics. This was agreed by the Director General for Regulation on 3 December 2024. For further details on the reason for the suspension and its impact please see the following statistical notice.

All official statistics are preannounced as provisional in line with the code of practice for statistics up to 12 months in advance of release with dates confirmed 4 weeks before scheduled release. For details of MMO’s upcoming releases please see the release calendar here
