Annual heat mortality monitoring reports
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) (and previously Public Health England) has published annual heat mortality monitoring reports each year since 2016. The reports give estimates of heat-associated deaths during heat episodes in each summer. Over this period, we have observed a general trend of increasing heat-episode days and increasing heat-associated deaths.
These reports summarise heat-associated mortality during summer heat episodes to inform public health actions. They support the Adverse Weather and Health Plan to protect the population from heat-related harm to health.
Reports from 2024 onwards are official statistics. Reports from 2020 to 2023 are classified as research and analysis. Previous reports from 2016 to 2019 were published by Public Health England.
Ad-hoc heat mortality monitoring reports
Ad-hoc statistics estimate heat-associated mortality during exceptional heat events. These reports present interim estimates of observed mortality using the same methodology as the annual heat mortality monitoring reports.
Estimates provided in the interim heat mortality monitoring reports are provisional, and will be updated in the annual heat mortality monitoring reports.
