The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA)’s heat mortality monitoring helps to provide information on deaths observed during heat episodes each year to inform public health actions.
This report presents interim estimates of heat-associated mortality during the May and June 2026 heat episodes in England. Produced in response to the exceptional nature of these events, it provides high-level estimates of the total mortality impacts associated with each episode using the UKHSA heat mortality monitoring methodology.
The estimates are provisional and will be updated in the annual Heat mortality monitoring report, England: 2026, which will include analysis of all heat episodes observed during summer 2026.
We estimate heat-associated mortality in England using death registration data, comparing daily deaths during heat episodes with baseline daily deaths.
Adverse heat events are increasing in frequency and intensity as a result of climate change. The health impacts of these events can be significant particularly for vulnerable populations. The Adverse Weather and Health Plan is intended to protect the population from heat-related harm to health.
We publish annual heat mortality monitoring reports as official statistics.
