Environment Agency Chief Scientist's Group core research

Chief Scientist's Group core research published since 2021, grouped by research theme.

Research in the Chief Scientist’s Group is structured around four core Research Themes:

  • Environment and Human Health
  • Protecting and Enhancing Ecosystems
  • Net Zero and Circular Economy
  • Climate Adaptation and Resilience

We also carry out research to support legislation for emerging chemical threats and produce an annual review of our science each year.

We have a Science Strategy that sets out our vision for science in the Environment Agency to 2030.

We are in the process of adding all core research published on gov.uk to this collection page, dating back to 2015. Pre-2015 research can be found in The National Archives.

Environment and Human Health

Our goal is to research the role that the environment plays in public and individual health.

Protecting and Enhancing Ecosystems

A transformative research programme that will generate new understanding and innovative approaches to strengthen the EA’s response to threats to ecosystem health and support nature recovery.

Net Zero and Circular Economy

To generate new knowledge of the potential impacts, risks, trade-offs and co-benefits of low-carbon technologies and activities on the environment and communities.

Climate Adaptation and Resilience

To develop knowledge of climate impacts and grow understanding about how to prepare for these, reduce vulnerabilities and build resilience to change.

Chemical assessment

Develop knowledge and tools to measure and assess chemical hazards and risks in support of the operational delivery of UK chemical legislation.
