Hurricane Melissa
Hurricane Melissa made landfall in the eastern part of Cuba in the early hours of 29 October. The hurricane has now passed through the eastern province and has left Cuba. The full impact of the hurricane is not yet clear, but damage is expected to be significant. The storm brought exceptional levels of wind and rainfall, resulting in flash floods, landslides and storm surges. Infrastructure and services are likely to be severely impacted for some time. The national power grid in Cuba is already under severe pressure and the impact of hurricane Melissa could lead to further significant power outages.
Stay informed by monitoring local and international weather updates, including from the Cuban Civil Defence Authorities, the INSMET weather forecast centre, and the US National Hurricane Centre. Follow the guidance of local authorities. See ‘Extreme weather and natural disasters’ on the ‘Safety and security’ page.
Mosquito-borne diseases
There are currently a number of reported instances of Dengue, Oropouche and Chikungunya in Cuba. Take precautions to avoid or prevent mosquito and other insect bites.
Power outage
Lengthy power outages are a daily occurrence across Cuba. Take precautions such as conserving fuel, water, food and mobile phone charge, particularly if travelling outside Havana. Transport may be affected due to fuel shortages and the inability to refuel during power outages. Ensure you have enough fuel before setting off on your journey.
