You must register any business premises in England or Wales that produces or stores more than 500 kilograms of hazardous waste a year. This is known as a ‘hazardous waste notification’.
Once registered you’ll get a ‘premises code’ and legally be able to store or move the waste off your premises.
Your registration lasts 12 months and must be renewed 1 month before it expires.
Companies in Scotland dealing with hazardous waste (also known as ‘special waste’) may need different licences or permits.
Businesses involved in several manufacturing and farming processes will need a pollution prevention and control permit.
Businesses who store, treat or recycle waste will need a waste management licence.
Companies in Northern Ireland don’t need to register.
